Able-ism in the City, poster work by Justin Murray

Take a Step in My Shoes

A Mapping and Audio project by Access for All, Galway City

This project arose from a discussion about the Powerlessness and lack of influence of people with a disability when it comes to accessing the public spaces of Galway city. Those who are marginalised tend to disengage from decision-making processes; participation in those processes needs to be reinvigorated.

Through this Access for All project, the exclusion from the public realm of people with a disability was named and situated. The work makes visible and audible the isolation, lack of access and barriers to accessibility, that lead to a diminished sense of belonging in community settings and outdoor spaces.

The unique audio piece below enabled contributors to describe the impact of these matters on their mental health and wellbeing, benefiting from having their experiences validated.

Take a Step in My Shoes will be aired as part of a community radio show on Flirt FM presented by members of Access for All on December 3rd, the International Day of People with Disabilities.

The project has been facilitated, produced and edited by Fiona Woods, with original music contributed by Jolie Collins. It was funded by the Healthy Ireland Community Mental Health Fund, supported by the Department of Health, GCP, GCCN and DFI.
