Galway City Community Network (GCCN) is delighted to share that real progress is underway on a light rail solution for Galway! The National Transport Authority (NTA) has commissioned a Light Rail Feasibility Study as part of its updated Galway Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (GMATS). This study brings renewed energy to the Gluas campaign,
which we’ve proudly supported alongside GLUAS – a valued member of GCCN – for many years in our advocacy for sustainable, inclusive transport.
The study suggests a potential 16.5-kilometer route from Knocknacarra to Oranmore, with an extension to Ballybrit and Parkmore. This corridor could serve up to 13 million passengers annually, reducing traffic congestion and creating a vital east-west connection for Galway.
Aligned with Galway’s sustainable vision, the light rail project would complement other transport initiatives like BusConnects, CycleConnects, and the Cross City Link. It reflects our shared goal for an accessible, environmentally friendly Galway that meets the needs of our growing community.
The release of the feasibility study is not only an exciting development for the Gluas project but also represents progress toward achieving the community-centred vision for Galway’s future.
GCCN’s ongoing support for this project reflects our commitment to advocating for accessible, sustainable transport that addresses the needs of all people living in Galway city.
As part of this feasibility phase, the NTA will be opening up a public consultation, giving Galway’s residents a chance to shape the future of transport in our city. This will be critical in helping to push for transport policies that ensure everyone can benefit from and contribute to a thriving, sustainable Galway.
Stay tuned as further details will be shared when available.
And please join us in advocating for a light rail solution that serves the community and aligns with Galway’s sustainable development goals.
