Get into Nature for Biodiversity Week in Merlin Woods
Birds, Bats, Flowers, Yoga and more ..
Friends of Merlin Woods have organised another week of events for Biodiversity week this year in collaboration with various groups and organisations. Biodiversity Week events begin on Sunday May 20th and will run until Sunday May 27th.
The week begins with Health and Nature, a mindful walk and yoga will take place on Sunday May 20t from 9.30am-10.30am with Agnieszska Drelichowska, Yoga Stretch Galway. Enjoy the relaxing experience in a beautiful setting surrounded by the aroma, visuals and sounds of the wildlife around you. A suggested donation of 5 euros to our workshop leader.
Monday 21st May 7.30pm-9.30pm, John Lusby, Birdwatch Ireland will lead the dusk chorus, identifying the sounds and songs which can be heard as you walk around the woodland.
Tuesday 22nd May, International Day of Biological Diversity, Galway Bat Group will join us on this day to tell us all about the bats likely to be hunting and foraging within the woods. They will have specimens to show and bat detectors, so we can hear the bats as they fly about in the night sky over the woodland. This event will commence at 9.30pm -11pm.
Wednesday 23rd May, Friends of Merlin Woods will link in with a local school and will explore the wildlife which can be found at this time of year in the woodlands from butterflies, bees, flowers, birds and much more.
Thursday 24th May 7pm-9pm Nature Through the Lens with Noel Barbour Photographer, Friends of Merlin Woods will guide budding photographers, enthusiasts through a workshop on how to take photographs of the varying different wildlife which can be found in Merlin Woods. A very successful workshop took place last year and is a worthwhile experience for all levels of photographers.
Friday 25th May 7pm-9pm The recently formed BSBI (Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland) Galway will lead a walk exploring the wild-flowers and plants to be found in Merlin Woods and its habitats. Merlin Woods has a wonderful array of Orchids and wild plants a spectacular sight to see during early Spring and Summer.
Saturday 26th May 11am-1pm, to compliment the photography and the floral workshops, Debbie Reilly will be running a Botanical Art class for beginners. Debbie Reilly artist has worked with us on many projects over the years and was also part of the Our Place Galway 2020 which took place a couple of years ago here. All materials are provided.
Sunday May 27th 11-3pm Go Wild in Galway will run from 11-3pm
The second day of the Galway’s wildlife festival “Go Wild in Galway” will take place in Merlin Woods and registration will take place at 11am. Go Wild Nature Camps is organised by Birdwatch Ireland, Vincent Wildlife Trust, Near Health NUIG and GMIT. We are delighted to have the team here to showcase the amazing array of wildlife the woods have to offer. We will explore the birds, butterflies, small mammals, moths and invertebrates. It is an amazing camp for kids to learn about wildlife and to get into nature.
Meeting point for all events are at Merlin Woods Community Garden, just past the playground in Doughiska. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing. 409 buses will take you from Eyre Square and the stop is near Joyce’s Supermarket on Doughiska Rd. Parking is available along the park in Doughiska.
