An independent, autonomous civil society is a key feature of any healthy democracy. Without civil society, we would never have seen the women’s movement. We would not have had a movement for Traveller rights or campaigns against poverty and inequality. The community sector is that element of civil society that works with and represents the most disadvantaged and marginalised communities and groups. It works to challenge and reduce poverty, social exclusion and inequality. It provides for participative democracy, giving people opportunities to engage in decisions that affect their lives.
