Galway Bike Festival will take place in tandem with National Bike Week over the period June 14 to June 22, 2014. In support of this now annual festival, Galway City and County Councils invite applications from organisations wishing to host a cycling event or initiative during the festival. Festival coordinators highlight that last year more than 30 different cycling events took place including numerous family friendly cycles, children’s bike racing, mountain biking, bike orienteering, a bike fest film night, accessible cycling, cycle to work events and heritage cycles. Feedback received from event organisers consistently highlight positive spin offs particularly in terms of youth and community development, road safety, increased awareness of the health benefits of cycling and greater knowledge of the current and potential cycling tracks and routes in the City and County.
Funding of up to €500 is available to organisations wishing to host an event, which can be used to cover costs such as cycle training, face-painting, bike repairs, picnic refreshments and local fliers etc. Organisations interested in becoming involved need to submit an application form, prior to the deadline of March 14, 2014. Submissions received will be assessed by reference to the strength of the application in terms of expected number of participants and promotional methods. Organisers wish to highlight that, events which target new or lapsed cyclists are particularly welcome.
